Why We Chose a Shoes-On Play Experience at STEAM Station
If you’ve ever had to turn the house upside down five minutes before leaving just to find a matching pair of clean socks, raise your hand!
We’ve all been there. And to be completely honest with you? Some kids just aren’t sock people.
We get it. As a kid, I absolutely hated wearing socks. The tightness, those annoying toe seams, the way they made my feet feel; you name it, I couldn't stand it. At one point, the only way I’d wear them was if they were mismatched, purely because it made the whole ordeal a little more fun.
These days, I don’t (usually) have a problem with socks, but I still love my shoes. Shoes, especially sneakers, are the ultimate form of self-expression to me. They keep us comfortable, but they also come in every color and style imaginable. Whether you’re rocking bright, electric pink or a toned-down black and purple, your shoes let you match your outfit, your personality, or your mood.
So when it came time to set the policies for STEAM Station, we had a big decision to make about footwear.
Wait, No Sock Policy?
If you’ve visited traditional indoor venues or trampoline parks, you’re probably used to the standard routine: unlace everyone’s shoes at the door, stash them in a cubby, and make sure every person has socks on (or buy a pair at the counter).
Would our floors probably last a little longer if we went the socks-only route? Sure. Could we make an extra buck or two if we forced everyone to buy custom branded socks? Absolutely.
But that’s just not what STEAM Station is about.
We built this space to be warm, welcoming, and hassle-free for everyone. Here, you don't have to worry about buying special socks or hunting down matching pairs before heading out the door. Just throw on your favorite pair of sneakers, and you're good to go. (And whether you wear socks inside those shoes? Hey, that’s totally your business!)
Here is why we decided to break the mold and keep our floors shoes-on:
1. Comfort & Self-Expression
We want kids (and adults!) to feel like themselves when they walk through our doors. If your child’s favorite pair of sneakers makes them feel confident, energetic, and ready to move, we want them wearing them!
2. Fast Footwork & Safety
A lot of the movement and active games at STEAM Station require quick feet and sharp turns. Let's be honest: fast footwork is just plain easier (and grippier) in proper athletic shoes. Plus, when feet are moving rapidly, wearing shoes protects those little toes from accidentally getting stepped on while everyone is immersed in play.
3. Convenience (and Less Stink!)
Who wants to spend ten minutes wrestling shoes off in a crowded entryway, only to spend another ten minutes hunting down lost shoes at the end of the visit? Keeping your shoes on saves time, frees up space, and means we don't need giant walls of cubbies or lockers full of stinky shoes.
4. Zero Hassle at the Door
You shouldn't have to check off a mental laundry list of "Did I pack socks for everyone?" just to pop out for a fun afternoon. No extra gear required. Just get everyone in the car and head on over! (Though we do always recommend booking your spot online ahead of time so you know we have space waiting for you!)
At the end of the day, STEAM Station is designed around ease, fun, and total inclusivity. So lace up your favorite pair of kicks, express your style, and come ready to move! We can't wait to see you.
