Older Kids Need to Play, Too!

When you hear the words "play space," what comes to mind?

Chances are, you picture toddlers wobbling behind miniature shopping carts full of plastic food, primary-colored ball pits, and a sea of stray pacifiers while parents sip oat-milk lattes in a play café.

It’s a classic scene. But what if "play" didn’t come with an expiration date at age five?

Whatever Happened to Playing Until the Streetlights Came On?

Growing up, my friends and I stayed outside until the streetlights flickered on and the fireflies came out. On summer weekends, play evolved into neighborhood Night Games. We would knock on every front door within a quarter-mile radius to round up a crew for Spud, Capture the Flag, or Tag in the cul-de-sac. Elementary and middle schoolers played side-by-side without a second thought. Those were the days!

Somewhere along the line, our culture decided that play belongs exclusively to the sandbox crowd. Once kids hit third or fourth grade, play is abruptly replaced by travel-team schedules, academic pressure, and solitary screen time. We hand them devices, usher them into adulthood early, and then wonder why so many tweens feel isolated and burned out.

The Science Is Clear: Big Kids Still Need to Play

The science tells us we have it backward. Research highlighted by the American Academy of Pediatrics confirms that play remains a vital developmental necessity through elementary school, middle school, and adolescence.

According to the NIH, play is an essential tool that can help boost brain function, increase fitness, improve coordination, and teach cooperation for kids.

Active, social play fuels executive functioning, sharpens collaborative problem-solving, and acts as a powerful buffer against chronic anxiety. Older kids don’t outgrow the need to move, create, and connect; they simply run out of welcoming spaces to do it.

STEAM Station: Bridging the Gap Between Little Kid Fun and Independence

That’s why we created STEAM Station; we wanted to bridge the awkward gap between little kid fun and adult independence.

STEAM Station isn't another toddler gym, nor is it a sterile computer lab. It is a dynamic hub designed specifically for active, curious kids ages 5 to 14+ (and the respectful high schoolers who still love a friendly challenge):

  • Exergaming & High-Energy Play: Dynamic attractions where physical stamina meets video game strategy, letting kids blow off real steam while working as a team or engaging in a friendly competition.

  • Hands-On STEAM Challenges: Creative robotics, tinkering workshops, vehicle builds on test tracks, and immersive tech that turn curiosity into tangible projects.

  • Community-First Hangouts: A modern, safe environment where kids can disconnect from passive scrolling and reconnect with real-world peers.

  • Unforgettable Field Trips & Group Events: Curriculum-aligned adventures that trick kids into learning because they are having too much fun to notice.

While we proudly offer dedicated toddler hours and an enclosed zone for our smallest visitors, our heart lies in giving older kids their playground back. Whether they come to master a tech challenge, beat a high score with their classmates, or simply remember what it feels like to laugh uncontrollably with friends, they have a home here.

Growing older shouldn't mean outgrowing the joy of play.
