Finding Your Third Place in Knightdale
Growing up, my brother spent hours upon hours at a funky little coffee shop near downtown Raleigh called The Third Place. As a kid, I never really understood the name; I just knew that he was there all the time and that they made the most delicious Italian sodas, a treat I’d never seen anywhere else. It was comfortable, unique, and entirely its own world.
It wasn’t until adulthood that the concept finally clicked.
Sociologists talk about our lives revolving around three anchors: your first place (home), your second place (work or school), and your third place, that vital, welcoming spot where you go simply to unwind, connect, and exist without an agenda. The theme song from Cheers nailed the heart of it decades ago: we all crave a place “where everybody knows your name.”
That craving for community is very real. According to research from the American Enterprise Institute, 58% of Americans say having a local spot, whether a coffee shop, park, or gym, is what truly makes them feel connected to their neighbors.
While adults might find that solace at a neighborhood pub or the gym, where do kids, teens, and whole families go to find theirs?
