The Tech Behind the Play: Exploring Nex Playground

At STEAM Station, our mission is to create a welcoming family destination for entertainment and learning, where people of all ages gather to move, build, and explore together through STEAM-based active play.

To make that happen, we are bringing in some truly impressive technology.

When the concept for STEAM Station first began, I was inspired by an interactive game wall at a popular trampoline park. My family loved the experience, and it sparked a question: why not open a space dedicated to those types of interactive environments? I quickly discovered that these systems are a significant investment, but that hasn't stopped us. We have curated a fantastic lineup of technology, and I want to share one of my personal favorites with you.

Movement Bays

We are installing a Nex Playground in each of our two movement bays. Despite the name, it isn't a physical playground in the traditional sense. It is a compact, camera-based system that turns an entire area into an interactive digital space. From classic titles like Candy Land and Hungry Hungry Hippos for younger guests to Starri, a music-based rhythm game for teens and adults, the Nex system provides activity for every skill level.

Dance & Rhythm Games

While STEAM Station doesn't feature a conventional dance floor, our movement bays offer plenty of opportunities to find your rhythm. If you love moving to music, you can jump into titles like Barbie Dance Party, Zumba Fitness Party, or Move and Groove with Grover.

Inclusive Play

One of the best features of the Nex platform is its commitment to accessibility. The system includes several mobility-inclusive games designed for guests in wheelchairs, those with limited mobility, or those who use walking assistance, so everyone can participate in the action.

  • Keepy Uppy: Prevent the virtual balloon from touching the ground in this classic challenge for all ages.

  • Elmo & Abby’s Magical Letter Hunt: Fly through digital landscapes to collect letters and stars while building a virtual sticker book.

  • Fruit Ninja: Use your hands and arms to slice through fruit while dodging obstacles.

  • Connect 4 Bounce: A physical twist on the board game that uses arm and shoulder movements to launch balls into a row of four.

  • 2048 Arms: An upper-body version of the popular strategy app.

  • Luminous: Use gentle body tilts to navigate a high-speed track and avoid hurdles.

Sports and Fitness

The Nex Playground is also a powerhouse for sports enthusiasts. Rather than limiting our space to a single-sport simulator, this system allows us to offer a wide variety of athletic challenges:

  • NHL Puck Rush: Compete and score goals with your favorite hockey teams.

  • Family Fitness Challenge: Test your speed and agility by jumping hurdles and kicking soccer balls at targets.

  • Homerun Heroes Starstrikers: An anime-inspired baseball game where you step up to the plate with an imaginary bat.

  • Nex Gym Fitness: Tackle a full-body workout featuring squats and bicep curls, either solo or with your family.

  • Bowling Strike: Perfect your form in a simulated bowling alley.

  • Basketball Knockout: A rapid-fire shooting gallery to see who has the best aim.
